Unit 18 tells about teaching different groups of students. When the teacher has a beginners group he/she should identify the type of the beginners. It can be absolute beginners, false beginners, adult or young beginners. To teach beginners the teacher should bear in mind the students’ need, should have clear aims, give simple and clear instructions, be visual, encourage students use English in the class, revise the material, give the homework and don’t use students’ native language. It is usual situation when the teacher has individual students. Some activities are impossible to do because there is only one student. But teacher can use short stories, newspapers, idioms, relevant topics to discuss, listening, pronunciation, videos, phrasal verbs, etc. Homework is also very important but teacher should remember that sometimes students cannot cope with it. Teaching children can be the most rewarding and interesting due to children’s curiosity. Patient repetition, positive attitude and praise can help children to develop their self-esteem and language level. But children need frequent changes of activities during one lesson because they have short attention span. Classroom’s environment can be improved by posters, cartoons, children’s art. During the lesson the teacher should use English, speak slowly, give clear demonstrations, play simple games, etc. Sometimes children’s behaviour is disruptive and can be determined by many factors. Some of them can be solved the teacher (boredom, attention seeking, peer pressure), some of them are under the teacher’s control (problems at home or outside). Teaching Business English takes place in different ways: one-to-one, in-company groups, in-school groups. Student in the Business English category can be named as clients. The class age can vary from 20 to 50 with or without previous language learning experience. But not all Business English students have high motivation and attendance can be irregular. That is why it is better to do the “needs analysis” before the course. That will help teacher to understand students’ requirements and needs, or any other information required for future lessons.
