Unit 13 identifies some specific groups that many ESL teachers are likely to teach. These include beginners, children, individuals, business or ESP groups, monolingual and multilingual groups. Beginners may be separated into subgroups however generally beginners need a lot of patients with controlled language and lots of visual stimulation. It's very important to stay in English during the whole lesson and even more important that the students speak as much as possible. Children have very different requirements to adults as they often need slow exaggerated speech from the teacher. They also enjoy very visual lessons and react well to positive reinforcement. Children also enjoy a rewards system such as the use of stickers for good behaviour and don't react well to being singled out in the classroom. Teaching individual students means classes need to be customised to the students needs. Individual classes can be very tiring and often many activities used in group classes can't be used in individual classes. These classes however mean that there a no mixed levels and quite often the students are highly motivated. A needs analysis is key to successful one on one classes as it allows you to find out specific language needs. It's also important to have a needs analysis for business classes. These classes should be tailored to the needs of the individual's role within the business. For this a general understanding of the clients job is important even though a basic grounding in the language English is usually goal of the class. Classes can also be either monolingual or multilingual being that a group of students either have the same native language or their common language is English. It is obviously a great advantage for the student to be in a multilingual group as they are forced to communicate to their peers in English. Monolingual classes however allow the teacher to identify common difficulties with that specific nationalities learning of the English language whilst multilingual classes will have a variety of difficulties. The most important recommendation for teachers in either classroom is to avoid the use of the students mother tongue.
