This unit covers an observation of two ESA Methodology run classes, which highlights and brings into focus the role of the teacher, proper and well done lesson planning and ultimately the relationship of that to student learning or engagement. The First Lesson is an example of a not well run and prepared class, the teacher exhibits a lack of preparation and an ad hoc way of running the lesson, for example in the first lesson the lack of a proper Engage phase and proper elicitation that would set up what the whole lesson is going to be about is mismanaged and the teacher simply asks students to give answers to his elicitation that have no context and only cause them further confusion. This kind of approach which carries throughout, means that students are discouraged causing a loss and lack of engagement in the lesson. The attitude and manner of the teacher in the First Lesson in correcting students is also quite intimidating and further leads to a non-development of any meaningful rapport and thereby a further loss of any meaningful engagement with the content being taught. In contrast the Second Lesson demonstrates a well thought out, structured and ultimately effectively run class. At each stage the students are given clear explanations, shown and made to elicit the language that reinforces the point of the lesson and helps the students to be much more confident and highly engaged throughout. The manner of the teacher is friendly, creating a great rapport with the students allowing them to be at ease to learn and not feel afraid to make mistakes. The teacher is also much more positively confident, because he has planned properly, knowing exactly what he is teaching and how to teach at each stage of the lesson to reinforce the language point and maximize the learning of his students. This gives students much more Student Talk time as compared to the First Lesson, where the lack of engagement means the teacher becomes the one that is mostly talking. Seeing these videos using the ESA methodology really helped me get a picture of what a well run class and proper teaching manner looks like using this method, and it further inspires me to learn, model and integrate such an approach into my own teaching in the future.
