Unit 7 focused on effective ways to teach vocabulary, grammar, and functions. Using the ESA framework, we are first introduced to the importance of vocabulary teaching, noting the selection process of vocabulary words, essential information to bolster understanding of new words, and techniques used to teach them. Next, this lesson gave an overview of how to teach new grammatical structures, emphasizing use, meaning, patterns, and forms. Lastly, language functions were touched on as this knowledge will help equip students for various situations of communication they find themselves in. Throughout each section, we are also reminded of the “boomerang,” “straight-arrow,” and “patchwork” patterns used to implement the ESA teaching style. My biggest takeaway from this lesson was the nuances which should be made within the lesson depending on the specific language topic I am covering. It is important to communicate the lesson objective clearly to my students so that the concepts can be further solidified in their minds.
