This unit explains common theories and methods of teaching a foreign language. Each method has its advantages and drawbacks, therefore none of them can be considered to be the most or the least efficient. A good teacher should use varied teaching techniques and methods not to become predictable and boring. The unit focuses on the Engage-Study-Activate methodologie(ESA) which is believed to be the most suitable for new teachers. ESA contains vast variety of techniques and activities and is initially devided into three main stages: 1) Engage. Get your students involved in the lesson using games, music, surveys, and other not difficult but exciting activities. Take it as a warm-up stage needed to attract students' attention and to break the ice. 2) Study. The language of the lesson is presented more specificly and is studied in detail. This stage starts with elicitation which is followed by the presentation of the main material and ends with practice. Students' worksheets should be checked right away and the errors should be identified and explained. 3) Activate. The students should be encouraged to use as much language as possible. During this stage the students talk, debate, participate in role-play activities etc. Nevertheless, the number of stages can be increased and the order changed but each lesson should start with the E stage and end with the A stage.
