In this unit, the responsibilities roles of teacher and learner are covered in depth. The qualities that a good teacher or learner should display are also highlighted.
A teacher does not have just a single role to play in the classroom, the role of a teacher is multifaceted, and each facet is relevant. To facilitate student centred lessons, the teacher will have to play a combination of these roles as dictated by the activity concerned, as well as the lesson objectives. A good teacher should be able to switch roles effectively and at the appropriate moment.
Each learner is unique and should be assessed in individually based on various factors including age, aptitude, attitude, character, motivation, culture language level and experience. A good teacher should be particularly aware of the different problems that students from different linguistic groups may face and be ready to address them.
The teacher-learner relationship is both important and complex. Above all, a teacher should set a good example because "good" teachers breed "good" learners.
