Unit four introduced the tense system of English. Starting off with the present tense and all four aspects of the present tense; simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous. This unit starts off with a warning claiming the tense system to most likely be the most difficult aspect of the English language for students and teachers. When I first read that claim, I found it hard to believe because, to my knowledge, there were only three different tenses in English; past, present, and future. Once started reading the unit and was presented with the four aspects that fall under each tense, I could understand why the tense system would be one of the more difficult aspects of the English language. This unit presented the different present tenses in a way that was the easiest to understand by focusing on four different areas; form, usage, typical student errors, and activate stage teaching ideas. I feel that the form is the easiest way to identify each tense. I found the different usages of each tense to be confusing and often found myself doubting my judgment on different examples. Task five on the task sheet proved to be the most challenging because I had a very hard time explaining what was wrong, why the mistakes were wrong and how it possibly happened. It was especially hard trying to figure out why I thought the mistake had been made since I didn’t have any background knowledge of the student who made the mistake. There are many possibilities as to why the mistake occurred, thus making slightly more difficult in coming up with an effective way to address the mistake. I plan on studying more about the tense system to get a better grasp on the slight differences in meaning and usages.
