Even as a native speaker, it's very difficult to see some of the subtle differences between various future tenses, particularly: going to and present continuous with a future meaning, so it's not surprising that students find this even more of a nightmare to learn. It's doubly confusing because in many situations any one of the future tenses adequately expresses what you want to say. Therefore, teachers tend to lack confidence with future tenses and do not explain them in adequate detail which leaves the students in confusion.
