As a native English speaker, one takes different tense structures for granted and has an intuitive sense of how to seamlessly switch from one to the other in daily conversation. However, in many languages these structures do not exist, so it is a challenge for students to learn these and for teachers to explain them logically. In my experience teaching in Japan, students have particular difficulty grasping the differences in usage between simple past, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. The clear explanations in this unit did give me some insights into how to explain these tenses in the future.
