Classroom management comes with experience of handling the group of students you are teaching. There are a number of strategies you can implement to improve the classroom environment. It is important to maintain eye contact and use gesture to engage students but seldom in a negative way to discourage learning. It is important to increase opportunities for students to speak as they do not always have the opportunity to speak The English language. If the teacher aims to increase student talk time, he/she can pair students up for activities especially during the study and activate phase. Engaging the whole class as a group however reduces the student talk time but allows the class to feel a sense of belonging and it is easier to organise. Groupwork helps to increase the student talk time however it can get out of hand and slow down the aim of the activity. Classroom seating largely depends on: Space available, type of chairs/tables. age of the students. nationality. students personality. It is up to the teacher to move students for the benefit of the entire class, and with good reason so other students can see the reason why. A teacher should try to reduce the length of time he/she has her back faced to the students and it is also important to give students individual attention. Giving instructions should be done is language that is as simple as possible. The instructions should be consistent, with provision of visual cues to facilitate understanding. Once the instructions has been explained the teacher should check if students understood the instructions by asking questions. Rapport between teacher and students affect largely how much the class is being enjoyed and how much the students learn. It also affects the level of discipline the teacher would have to maintain. Students exhibit problematic behaviours for a large number of reasons, and the teacher can prevent these problem behaviours by being consistent in his/her behaviour. The teacher should also address problematic behaviours immediately, in a calm manner, focused on the behaviour and not on the student, and address the student in private rather than in front of the whole class.
