Personally, this unit was very valuable to me because I believe knowing how to teach and manage a classroom is just as important as being knowledgeable about the content. During my time in school, since I knew that I wanted to be a teacher, I would observe some of my favorite teachers in order to discover why I thought they were good and what practices or methods they used to correct students, maintain order in an unruly classroom, and establish rapport. I also observed my least favorite teachers and made mental notes on why I thought their teaching methods were ineffective and just overall confusing or boring. I already had an opinion on what is the best seating arrangements for language classes. Over the years I have sat in a lot of different arrangements in language classes but I have found that the one I preferred was a horseshoe arrangement because all the students can see each other. It creates a comfortable environment for the students to participate in and no one is isolated or in the back because there is really only a front row. The students will feel closer to one another because they will be able to literally see each other in class and will be able to talk to one another directly or just greet one another. I was the most comfortable in classes with a horseshoe seating arrangement because of the small interactions I would have with my classmates before, during, or after class since we were faced towards one another. Teaching experience is something I have a minimal amount of practice in and that makes me very nervous and insecure. I am confident in my knowledge of the content but not so much in my ability to manage the reality of a classroom setting with students because they are just so many unknowns. This unit taught me about the more of the practical parts of teaching, managing the classroom. Some new things I learned was about eye contact, gestures, and the voice and the ways a teacher can use these techniques in the classroom. Another area of teaching that I always had a hard time with and was glad to learn more about was student discipline, especially because there are an abundance of factors to consider when disciplining and my lack of experience. Also, I never want to be the kind of teacher that students see as a pushover or overly strict. The tips in this unit of never making an empty threat were very helpful because I do that with my nephew who doesn’t listen because he knows that it’s an empty threat, so I hope to drop that habit or just follow through with the disciplinary actions. I appreciate that this unit addresses student discipline under three different subcategories of reason, prevention, and response rather than just response because I believe that the reason of the problematic behavior is very important to understand as a teacher. Sometimes, a student’s teacher is the only adult in their life that they can confide their problems in, which makes your understanding and willingness to be a confidant so significant. I know with experience I will be able to handle students behaviors better, but I took to heart the point to ask your colleagues advice because that would not have been my first thought but it makes a lot of sense and would most likely allow me to address the behavior better. Topics discussed in this unit regarding classroom management offers a great deal of useful information that I hope to one day incorporate into my own teaching.
