Starting off the first lesson is always challenging as the teacher has to build rapport and set the tone for the class. Usually no course work is covered in the first lesson and the teacher should spend time getting the students comfortable enough to participate. Large classes can potentially cause issues with students' attention and a teacher should use activities that allows all pupils to get involved. Students tend to revert to their native language when they have trouble expressing themselves in English and are not able to comprehend things that are required of them in the class.
There will always be reluctant students who are either intimidated or uncomfortable participating - these students can be encouraged by pairing them up with more fluent students, or giving them more controlled practice. role playing and tape recorders are also useful in helping these students feel more encouraged to speak.
