The content of Unit 1 has highlighted the possible roles of a teacher to me, and the importance of being sensitive and flexible when teaching different groups of learners. Awareness of differences in age, culture, motivation, learning styles, and responses is useful as it will help me in my planning of sessions, and in my approach to the different learners. It is important to have a good understanding of what I aim to teach, and to enjoy teaching, but I believe that it is even more important to ensure that the students are learning and that they enjoy the process. If they enjoy the process, it is more likely that they will be motivated to want to improve in their grasp of the language without too much external prompting. Learning more about the different levels of language ability is also beneficial as it can help me with preparation of materials to teach with, as well as with the process of assessing the learners and giving them feedback. Feedback to students is essential as it may encourage them or spur them to put in more effort. Being able to assess the progress of the learners is essential for me as a teacher as it is an indication of the effectiveness of the lessons, and if I need to improve on the way lessons are carried out. Developing a good rapport with the learners is important as it can help with execution of activities in class, especially if the students decide to be responsive to what the teacher proposes for them to do. In summary, it is important for me to have a good knowledge of what I plan to teach, but of equal, if not greater importance, is that I establish a good relationship with the students through a process of encouraging them and motivating them to be interested in learning. For groups that are simply not interested, perhaps making lessons fun could be a way to encourage them to keep attending and to learn through activities.
