This unit like all the other grammar units is somewhat of a challenge for me as a native speaker, because it is training me to become very conscious of what usually just comes naturally. What I find most helpful is the teaching ideas that surround learning these grammar principles, by seeing and going through these examples I am able to absorb the principles better much like I imagine my students will do. The only difference being is that I am just confirming what is already inherent in my language skills and I which naturally know. Whereas my students are learning principles that need to become part of the way they will learn to communicate and that needs reinforcing, good modeling and engagement/activation so that hopefully with practice it will become more natural to them. Teaching and learning the tenses is almost like training wheels when first riding a bike, it's a modeling of the proper use of a language, so that with properly structured activities and constant usage it becomes more and more natural without need to be conscious of the rules anymore later on.This is clearly the point and purpose of the ESA methodology, which utilizes the activate stages to give maximum talk time and usage of the grammar points being taught.
