After watching the two videos what struck me the most was how much teacher attitude can effect student participation. In the first video the teacher was critical, negative and intimidating, and a direct result was low student participation and confusion. In the second video however the teacher smiled, was encouraging and didn’t criticize mistakes. This encouraged student participation. Not only this, I learnt that it is essential that students understand an activity to participate effectively. This was seen most with the Activate activity introduced in the first lesson. It was not effective as instructions and purpose were unclear. Furthermore, the teaching point was unclear. I further learnt how the ESA lesson structure is effective in maximising student participation and how critical the Engage phase is in capturing attention and eliciting student knowledge of the language. The lesson that skipped the Engage phase did not encourage student participation.
