This unit covers pronunciation and phonology, explaining and making me aware of things which come naturally to a native speaker such as me but need to be consciously taught to EFL/ESL students. Things such as intonation, word and syllable stress,sound joining, and linked speech, and how these play into changing meaning, being able to clearly communicate, and also allow students to recognize these constructs so they can further improve and gain proficiency in their L2(English)language. It also covered the phonemic chart, and learning how to pronounce and recognize words using this chart, this again creates a system of making conscious and being able to practice what is as the unit states, an often neglected part of ESL teaching, and having a universal chart and understanding of articulation of the sounds and the way one should pronounce them is hugely helpful to get through the challenges of having to deal with the many different accents and the different ways things are said in English. This was a very difficult unit to undertake, but once learned and mastered, the benefits for both students and teachers in terms of teaching what is such an important part of proper communication of a language can be invaluable.
