Future tenses are known to be very confusing for ESL learners. Despite the number of future tenses, future time is often expressed by present tenses. Therefore, it is important for the teacher to help the students understand the proper usage of future tenses. Future Simple is used to express future facts, certainties, promises, predictions (not based on present evidence), assumptions or speculations, spontaneous decisions and threats. Future Continuous is used to say that something will be in progress at a certain time in future, to say what we think may be happening now, for polite enquiries, to talk about future events that are arranged or fixed. Future Perfect is used to express the idea that something will be done by a particular future time. Future Perfect Continuous is used in the same condition but it refers to a process in the future. There are a few present structures used to express future time. "Be going to" is used to express intentions, decisions made before the moment of speaking and predictions based on present evidence. Present Simple is used to suggest a formal situation or a more impersonal tone and in timetables and schedules. Present Continuous is probably the most common tool for expression future events in everyday life because it is used for definite arrangements, which are made every single day. It is also needed for decisions and plans without a time frame.
