It was great getting an overview of some of the main theories, methods and techniques of language instruction. Of course language instruction theories like the fluidity of language itself is something that continues to develop as we learn more about how learners themselves learn within different contexts and at different levels and age groups in the best way.
It is the sheer variety of contexts and situations that make something like the ESA method so great. ESA provides an overarching framework, that is highly adaptable and able to incorporate a variety of techniques and activities based on a solid foundation of what has been observed to be good language learning and teaching practice over the years. ESA somehow synthesises down to a fundamental level, the wide range theories which led to its formation.
Discovering and utilising the ESA method should give me more confidence as a teacher, because it provides me with a solid but variable framework from which I can both plan lessons and also gain insights into the effectiveness of my teaching and the progress of my students in relation to that. That is, a successfully run ESA lesson should show that by the final "Activate" stage my students are able to demonstrate, produce, and use language that was the main purpose of the lesson in the first place. ESA provides just enough structure with the right balance of variation as per teacher planning, to be highly engaging and non repetitive for both teacher and students, thus maintaining motivation which is such a key for language learning and effective teaching.
Before this I had experience with only Task Based Teaching/learning but this method is one I am really looking forward to master and develop myself in, because it seems to be the best of all worlds.
