In this unit I learnt about the different skills required for writing and speaking. In particular, I learnt about the different accuracy and fluency based speaking activities that can be used in the EFL classroom. Accuracy activities include drilling, model dialogues and guided role-play. Fluency based activities include free role play, discussions, debates and communication games. It was also interesting to learn ways that student participation can be encouraged. For example, making speaking activities purposeful, allowing time for students to plan and think, pair and group work and plenty of controlled and guided practice. I further learnt the key differences between speaking and writing activities for example the differences in grammar use, vocabulary and the importance of spelling, penmanship, layout and punctuation in writing. I particularly enjoyed learning about the importance of encouraging creative writing in the EFL classroom.
