This unit discussed the different types of assessments that English-learners may take in their studies. In language classes, the placement test is usually taken to create groups of similarly-skilled learners. A diagnostic test allows the teacher to see what skills are most in need of improvement within that particular group. Progress tests allow the teacher to measure the improvement of students as well as what skills have been forgotten. It is a good way for the teacher to gauge individual strengths and weaknesses, although some teachers have chosen to opt out of formal testing. In addition to these tests there are a variety of external exams, such as the TOEFL, IELTS, and the TOEIC, as well as various Cambridge Assessments that can be used all over the world.
