This unit taught the various parts of speech, as well as the intricacies within each one and the rules associated with them. For example, verbs can be either transitive (taking an object) or intransitive (can operate on their own). Adjectives and adverbs often follow "rules" in terms of the order in which they sit in a sentence when using multiple. Gerunds can function as a subject, an object of a verb, and an object of an adjective. Conjunctions can join words of the same class or join together clauses with words such as before, since, or because. Lastly, pronouns have various types, such as personal, possessive, reflexive, and relative. It is careful to note, however, that there is a difference between possessive pronouns (mine or ours) and possessive adjectives (my or our). These were all aspects of English grammar that we instinctively know but that we may not have been able to articulate in explaining.
