I've learned how to teach in different specialized groups and the needs each require. Teaching beginners can be one of the most enjoyable aspects of EFL teaching. There are many different types of beginner learners, such as adults, younger children, ones who don't understand the roman alphabet, and some who may even have some exposure to the language. Regardless, in this stage the teacher has to be clear with simple instructions, be able to adapt, and use many visuals, Teaching individual students is usually much less formal then group classes. It also has an advantage to the teacher and the student as the needs of the only student are clearly defined and the lesson can be programmed more easily to suit the student. Some activities that would work in group classes would not work in a one-on-one class, so the teacher would need to come up with different activities; short stories, photos, and recipes would work well. Teaching children can be one of the most rewarding experiences when teaching. Teachers need to adapt to the fact children may be able to pick up on things quicker, but they have a shorter attention span than adults. Teaching children requires lots of repetition, being slower and clear in pronunciation, much positive encouragement, and being engaging and imaginative in the class will help. And the teacher should be prepared to make fun of themselves while teaching. Business English requires an understanding of the client's job. This will help imensely when planning out a class. There is usually diversity of many different levels is a problem that could arise, as the groups are often put together according to job type. Giving separate worksheets to suit each clients needs and wants can help with different levels issue. Teaching in a multilingual class outside of the students' home country is great benefit in the classroom. Chances are most people will not speak a common language except for English, so the students are forced to speak English to communicate. However, teaching in a monolingual class in the students' home country, they will all know the same language and the teacher will have to ensure they aren't switching back to their own language by monitoring and ensuring they are taught some essential words and expressions.
