It is quite interesting to note the similarities in the Present tenses and Past tenses. It will be less difficult if good students can study them and connect sentences with either the present or past situations.
But just like the Past participle in the Present tenses, the Past simple in the Past tenses also have many irregularities that may compel students to memorize and drill, for effective construction of sentences.
The Past perfect is worth noting, as it speaks for itself, and stories associated are noticed to have happened already, and critical observations by good students will identify that indeed it is the "past in the past".
