This unit covered the productive skills in teaching: speaking and writing. Both skills require accuracy and fluency, however writing usually requires a greater degree of accuracy, while speaking requires more fluency. Accuarcy activities ae usually intergrated into the study phase (using controlled or guided activites), while fluency activities are practiced in the activate phase (using creative communication activites) of an ESA lesson.
Every student should be encouraged to practice these skills in the classroom and may sometimes need encouragement from the teacher to participate and to speak up in class. This can be done in ways such as group work, careful planning, and making speaking activities more prominent in the classroom.
Writing skills in the classroom can often be overlooked as teachers often prefer more speaking time then quiet writing time. However, each skill is just as important, so writing should not be overlooked. The skills acquired with writing should be encouraged, such as handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation, and creative writing.
