In this last unit I learned about how to handle common problems that teachers may come across in the classroom and how to handle them. Some problems are as followed: The very first lesson of a new or existing group of students is something every teacher will have to face. Don't go straight to the course book in the first lesson. Instead, do activities with the students that establishing rapport, and find out about your students needs, wants, and levels. Using warmers before jumping into a lesson can be a short and fun way to motivate the students to start using English. Some games that can be played are hangman, pictionary, and memory games. Sometimes in group classes there may be a variety of different levels, which can be a big problem for the teacher. To help deal with this, the teacher may give out different tasks depending on each students' level, pairing a stronger student with a weaker one, or some teachers may choose to do nothing and let the students to figure it out. In larger classes, it sometimes becomes more difficult to ensure all students are participating equally. Though, by using worksheets instead of activities, group work, choral repetition, and dynamics, it can become easier to deal with large classes. Students may want to speak in their native language as it's easier for them, but this should be kept to a minimum. Ensure that all activities are at an appropriate level of English for the students to understand. Teachers are bound to come across students who don't seem to want to participate in class. To help with this, give plenty of pair work and time to practice. Even the use of a tape recorder outside of class would work. The student has free rein to express themselves this way and the teacher can just listen to it instead. In most classes, there will be students who manage to finish work more quickly then others. Keep a few extra worksheets to hand out to finished students, such as a word search to keep them from getting bored while others finish up.
