This unit focuses on the qualities of both teachers and learners that form the basis of the teacher-student relationship. There are many different kinds of learners, as well as many different roles that the teacher can assume during a lesson. These learner qualities can combine with teacher qualities and teacher roles in many different ways, making the teacher-student relationship a complex and dynamic thing. Because of this, the teacher must be able to assess the quality of learning that is occurring with each student (and the class as a whole) and be able to make adjustments as necessary.
In addition to this astuteness, it seems to me that one of the most important qualities of a teacher is the ability to balance all of these available roles, not relying too heavily on any single one. This will give each student the opportunity to approach the material in many different ways, since different personalities, cultures, and life experiences will cause some methods to be more effective than others. Other important qualities of teachers are patience, kindness, enthusiasm, fairness, and the ability to motivate. These qualities are essential, no matter what role a teacher is currently embodying.
