Teaching pronunciation is one of the hardest. Most challenging things ESL teachers do because ofthere are so many variables and factors to consiider. Phonemes are individual sounds that, when glued together, make up words. In order to effectively teach the pronunciation of any phoneme, a teacher must demonstrate, exaggerate and differentiate. The first step is to demonstrate sounds so students know what you’re doing with your mouth. You can use your own face, mouth, models or diagrams to show proper placement of the tongue, lips, teeth in producing a certain sound. When teaching certain sounds that do not exist in the students’ native language; take the “th” sound for example, you stick your tongue way out and make it very clear that the “th” sound is different from the “S” sound. It is very important then to demonstrate and exaggerate so the students get it. Teaching stress is important because in English, each sentence or phrase has a “focus word” that receives and needs emphasis, Intonation is the rise and fall of the pitch of your voice. Most people think that only questions have a rising intonation and statements don’t. This is not entirely true. To end this chapter, I think that most ESL teachers, especially the native speakers, already possess a huge resource at their own disposal — their own voice.
