Lesson materials are a teacher’s wonderful assets. They help make the lesson flow more smooth, interesting and fun. These materials can either be authentic or created. Authentic materials are everywhere - magazines, radio programs, newspapers, menus, street signs, films, videos, songs and so on. Created materials on the other hand, are designed and made by the teacher to supplement or replace materials from a course book. These can be customized crosswords, flashcards, word search puzzles, etc. I personally make some lesson materials and it always makes me the happiest when I see my students enjoy and learn from them. All the efforts are worth it.
I use course books in my current job and I can say that it really does make a teacher’s job way easier than designing a whole entire syllabus from scratch. The teacher’s book provides a lot of good ideas to add and supplement to the lessons.
Of course, as we have emphasized from the beginning, being flexible and being able to adapt to your own teaching style is very very important. Your materials may be from course books or created, it all boils down on how you make it suitable for your students.
