In this unit I learned about the different methodologies there are when teaching English and the positives and negatives of each approach and method. I learned that many methodologies have built upon one another and that some are drastically different from one another. Once I learned about the different types, we focussed on the ESA method, which I actually have experience in. The ESA model lesson plan was used when I was teaching in Thailand and Laos this summer. During my trip was actually the first time I had heard about ESA, engage, study, activate and I thought it was a really good idea. It fits well with varying formats for lesson plans I have done in the past/ lesson plans required to use in my classes and at certain schools/districts. I was excited to learn more about the ESA method, considering I was only introduced to the basic concept of Engage-Study-Activate lessons and not the more in-depth understanding of the pros and cons, how this method came to be, and the main goals of this methodology. Giving feedback to students has always been something I have struggled with. Sometimes, I feel like I am giving too much feedback to where it is overwhelming the student, regardless of whether the feedback is mainly praise or not. Other times I feel like I am always just say "good job" and not being as specific as I should be. This unit helped me realize a bit more when it is appropriate to give feedback, how I should give feedback in certain situations, and what feedback I should give to students in certain stages of the lesson.
