I learned a lot from this unit. I realized how little I knew about the parts of speech from completing this unit and how hard it must be for English language learners to learn the grammar behind the English language. It also showed me that I need more practice differentiating the parts of speech and learning how to teach these ideas to my students in terms they will understand. I remember teaching verb tenses to the students in Thailand when I went on my trip I discussed in the unit before, and how the students really struggled with understanding the verbs tenses and when to add -ed and -ing, etc. Getting into the grammar of a language to me is much harder than learning the vocabulary of the language and I can understand why grammar is focused on after getting the basics of the vocabulary of the language down. Grammar adds another layer of complication that has to be worked out besides just recognizing the word. The word also needs to be used correctly within the sentence. Many of the parts of speech are also similar and can be confused with one another. I honestly wonder how I was able to learn all of these grammar rules and English is my native language!
