There will be challenging situations that’ll arise and test your skills as an effective teacher. You should always know what to do, how to improvise, manage and still make the lesson smooth and valuable to the students.
For the first lessons, establishing rapport and good impression with your students is essential for the rest of the school year. Classes can either be a new or existing group. Teachers can use fun, interesting question games or activities to let students not only introduce themselves but also get to know each other and the teacher as well. I personally use a thrilling 5-second self-introduction challenge where they say their name, age and favorite color within five seconds. This activity challenges them to speak clearly and fast. I also use the same concept as a warm-up review of the previous lesson. Speaking of warm-ups, I also use the classic activities/games that most experienced teachers use like memory games, Pictionary, hangman and tongue twisters.
For problems regarding large classes, students in different levels, reluctant students, pair work activities, group works, worksheets and role-plays will go a long way.
