Just like the present tense, the past tense also has four forms. Past Simple, when in the affirmative is formed by adding –ed or –d to its base form if it is not an irregular verb. This is typically used for a past action at a definite time. Past Continuous is created as the following: subject + was/were + verb+ing, and can be used in various scenarios such as for gradual development and a continuous past action at a specific time. Past Perfect is formed by added ‘had’ with the past participle, and is used to represent actions that occurred before other actions in the past. Past Perfect Continuous is also created as the following: subject + had + been + verb+ing. It is used to talk about longer actions in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about.
