This unit can be a little bit confusing for students. There're many ways in which they might express an action in the past and finding the correct one won't be easy. With that said, I think the unit gives very good teaching ideas about how to go about it. Most of them involves using pictures which I agree with because that way you can get the student to make observations and they have to express it in a different past tense. So basically, we have the past simple which indicates an action that's finished, past continuous which indicates that a past action was developing or took place in the past at a definitive time. Also, we have past perfect which states that an action had finished before another action and lastly we have past past perfect continuous that indicates actions that had been going until the moment we're talking about. We can say that this form isn't frequently used.
