The beginning text is correct. Students make a lot of errors with present tense. I have been teaching grammar for 7 years and my best idea is to talk about the situation more than the technical names of things. Students are aware that everything has a technical name, but I have found that they are more easily able to learn it if they imagine the situation. Not too much to learn, but the refreshment is always good.
