Testing a student in school is part of the natural order of teaching. Every student expects it to happen and teachers often remind students to study this material or that or an upcoming exam. They are a terrific way of monitoring student progress in the areas that you teach. My tests include a section for reading, writing, vocabulary, speaking, and grammar. Both productive and receptive skills need to be tested in order to gauge a student's progress. I enjoyed reading about all of the different tests that are available from different universities. My girlfriend just took the IELTS exam in order to get into a Masters program in the Netherlands. She found the experience to be a good way to build up her academic English. It is proof that people need to periodically test themselves to make sure that they are getting better and not falling backwards.
