It is interesting to discuss the purpose of teaching vocabulary. I have taught many students that are barely able to speak a sentence. This is not because they don't understand the proper grammar. They express their knowledge of it through their writing. It is a glaring lack of proper vocabulary that prevent them from being able to speak properly. When teaching vocabulary, I never put emphasis on the origin of the word, which I am glad that this chapter pointed out. It is difficult enough learning new words much less trying to remember where they come from. One thing I would suggest to do with older students is to teach possible synonyms and antonyms along with the word. This allows them to get a great understanding of context, especially among the words that they already know.
