There are different methodologies used to teach a language, and the most appropriate should depend on the difficulties of the language as well as the the level the students' are at. Typically the methodology lie on of spectrum of values, with one extreme being logistics of grammar, and the opposite extreme being practicality of phrases. TEFL discusses the method known as Engage, Study, Activate (ESA) to encourage the use of language, provide a direct teaching activity, and allowing students to explore the language for themselves. It depends on understanding how to elicit comprehensive questions about understanding of the language from the student. In ESA, there can be more than 3 activities, and in any order, as long it begins with Engage, and ends with Activation. Engage is used as a warmup for students to start thinking in English or about English by using what they already have learned. Study is used to provide the new material and lesson-point. Activation is used to allow students to use what they just learned, and creatively combine this with knowledge that already have. Correcting errors is the mainly focused in Study, while Engage and Activation is more focused on the fluency of speech. Since encouragement of language use is imperative, praising is equally, if not more, important than correcting; correcting should be done when necessary and in a way that doesn't embarrass a student, while also allowing for self-correction.
