In this lesson I learned about reading and listening. The four basic skills in any language are receptive skills-reading & listening, and productive skills-speaking & writing. There are two different reasons for reading and listening. The first one is for a purpose in which it will help the person achieve a goal. The second is for entertainment such as reading a book for fun or listening to a podcast. There are different skills when reading or listening. You not only have to use your eyes or ears but also your mind to grasp the overall information you are taking in. The areas that are important to understand are predictive skills, scanning specific info, skimming for a general idea, being detail oriented and deduction from context. There are a few problems with listening and reading that can create obstacles. It is important to pre-teach vocabulary. One way is to teach students difficult/unknown language & structures prior to reading or listening activities. Another option is carefully selecting texts so they are exposed to authentic and non-authentic texts. Non-Authentic texts allow students access to language suited to their skill and Authentic texts should help with building confidence. Another important subject is choosing a topic to learn about. It is very beneficial to pick something of interest to the students so that it will help motivate students to learn. As a teacher then it is crucial to learn what interests the students. One important feature of teaching receptive skills is incorporating comprehension tasks. A couple examples that were given would be jigsaw reading, jumbled texts or even jumbled stories to have students sort out. The last part of the lesson went over an example of a Patchwork ESA lesson. The correct way to do this is engage the students, study, activate, study and activate. Furthermore to reiterate what was learned was choosing a topic that will interest students, peak interest before reading/listening, pre-teach difficult vocab, mix up materials and incorporate activities that transition smoothly from the text you are teaching.
