This unit is a basic introduction to the roles of a teacher as well as student levels and characteristics and noteworthy points at each. For teachers, they may serve a variety of roles throughout the class such as that of an organizer, model, assessor, resource, moderator, tutor, participant, and observer. It is important to be able to switch to between these roles at the correct times. For students, there are many factors that may affect the way they approach learning and the way in which the teacher needs to structure their lesson in order to motivate them. Such factors include, fluency level, ethnic background, age, current perceptions, behavior and reason for taking the class. In any class, there needs to be a good rapport between teacher and student in order for it to succeed. They teacher must care about teaching, and furthermore about their students learning. The student needs to be motivated, take charge of their own learning, and be receptive to what they are being taught. Teaching is not a one-way street, but with the right attitude and motivation, both can thrive in their roles and push each other to new heights.
