Unit 10 made comparisons between a successful and unsuccessful ESL lesson. In the first lesson, the teacher used complicated vocabulary and topics that were too difficult to be understood by the lesson. His attitude towards the students was also not encouraging and was counterproductive to their learning. The main thing I noticed was that he would correct mistakes too much and often blatantly tell students they were wrong. This discourages them and makes them less willing to participate and try. In the second lesson, the teacher started out with a simple engage activity that utilized vocabulary and grammar the students had already known. This helped them to feel more comfortable going into the lesson. The vocabulary and topics he used to illicit and study the material were also easier and more applicable to daily life. He was also more encouraging and when students made a mistake, didn't condemn them for it. I learned that in order to have an effective lesson, you must first engage the students and make them feel comfortable from the start. One of the most important things is having a good attitude and being encouraging and uplifting. It also helps to be prepared so that there aren't any dead periods and the lesson flows smoothly. These dead periods can throw off the students concentration and cause a loss of interest. Going over the grammar points with many example sentences and engaging the students by asking them questions and having them ask and answer each other's questions also helps to engage them in the lesson and keep them attentive.
