Unit four introduces us to the tenses used in the English language. I learnt there are twelve tenses for the purposes of this TEFL course. They each have four components which include simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous. The focus for the study on tenses was on four areas. These consist of form, usages, typical errors and activate stage teaching ideas. These areas were used to analyse the four present tenses which include present simple, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous. It’s very interesting to see how the different tenses are used with example sentences. It makes it much easier to process when reading and learning. The sample teaching ideas are useful when putting the theory learnt in the unit into practice in creative and interesting ways. I feel this is essential in giving the students the freedom to express themselves in the language as best they can. Certain parts of present tenses can be confusing for the students but with on-going support and dedication from the teacher and commitment from the students, these challenges can be overcome.
