This Unit covers the basics of the past tense and its many usages: past simple, past perfect, past continuous, and through past perfect continuous. The material gives examples of what each tense covers and its application. For example, the past simple has a straightforward meaning, with a sentence such as "John went home." Past perfect implies the past equivalent of the present perfect, with a sentence such as "When I arrived the concert had already started." The past continuous implies an action that was ongoing but has since stopped, such as with "The winds were rising." The past perfect continuous implies this without a definite stopping point before another action, such as with a phrase like, "She had been clipping her toes when the phone rang."
