Pronunciation is a process which a word or language be spoken. Teaching pronunciation does not impede the learning of grammar and vocabulary, thus, it is an essential prerequisite. I have learned that students should learn to read and be able to write phonetic transcript of words in order to learn English. Some words are more important than the other words and the more important words are pronounced with greater force and made prominent, that relative force we called stress. The raising and lowering the pitch of the voice called intonation. Intonation also shows the utterance is a question or statement. It also indicates the speaker's attitude towards the matter of utterance or the listener. Stress and intonation in pronunciation are as important as grammar and vocabulary. The international phonemic alphabet which focuses on the sounds of spoken words. It is a chart contain all the sounds for each sound it gives the symbols. I learned the four sections in the chart and they are consonants(voiced and unvoiced), diphthongs and vowels. In teaching IPA, the teacher uses articulation which includes the speech organs, places and manner of articulation. The benefits of teaching phonemic alphabet is that the students will learn that spelling and pronunciation often differs. In my opinion, teachers should consider the language level before teaching IPA. Teaching aims must be realistic and attainable. Some L2 learners achieve proficiency to grammar and vocabulary but proficiency seems to acquired by a few. So, it is not necessary to set high goals because the main purpose for teaching ang learning English is that the students will be able to communicate with the target language. And yet it is still very tempting to define the goal of teaching and learning pronunciation that L2 learners will be able to speak like a native speaker but it does not mean that one does not have to speak like a native speaker to communicate successfully in English. I personally think that IPA is rewarding, with higher level students it is very important that they recognise the symbols. They can become independent learners and refer to the dictionary to find out how the words are pronounced.
