Unit six continues with the tenses used in the English language. The focus is now on the past tense. There are some similarities in usage when compared to the present tense. The past tense also makes use of the four components which include simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous. This unit also focused on four areas - form, usages, typical errors and activate stage teaching ideas. These areas were used to analyse the four past tenses which include past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. Once again, it was made easier and very useful to see how the different tenses were used with example sentences. As with the present tense, there are areas that may be problematic to the students. These areas include the use of irregular verbs, confusing past simple with past continuous and leaving out ‘to be’ or ‘ing’ in the past continuous just to mention a few. As an English speaker, it was very helpful to have the tenses divided up into different areas for analysis. This is something I take for granted, being able to just speak the language without giving it much thought. I feel that I can improve on my English through careful analysis and application.
