In this unit I was presented with information about managing the classroom. I learned how eye contact, gesture and voice can be used to improve the atmosphere of the classroom and encourage students. One interesting point I learned was about using a student's name at the end of a question instead of the beginning to ensure the other students don't tune out what the teacher is saying because they know they won't need to answer. By saving the student's name until the end of the question, all the students will be working on the problem presented and staying engaged in the lesson. The different student groupings was interesting, from the whole class to individual work. I appreciated the inclusion of probable noise levels in pairs and small groups.
I also learned about classroom arrangement, the teacher's position in the classroom and how to use it well, particularly avoiding talking with one's back to the students. How to best give instructions, establish rapport with students (which could also be used in other areas of life), maintaining discipline, and responding to problem behavior. This unit was enjoyable and full of information and tips that I will greatly appreciate once I am in the classroom.
