In this unit I learned about the future tense in English. This tense refers to an activity that will take place soon or latter on. There are a number of ways to express this. The seven most common are future simple, future continuous, future perfect, future perfect continuous, be going + infinitive, present simple and present continuous. Future Simple has a few main functions. The first is to talk about unplanned or spontaneous future events. The second is for predictions that are not based on current evidence. Another is assumptions or even threats. Shall is frequently used in making suggestions or invitations. Will generally expresses a stronger intention. The next form is Future Continuous which is used in a few different ways. It can be used to say something that will be in progress at a specific time in the future. It is used to predict the present to say what we thing is happening. Also it can refer to future events which are fixed or decided. Another form is Future Perfect Simple which is used to look at events or actions from a point in the future after we expect the event or action to already have finished. It is often associated with a time phrase beginning with either by or before. The future perfect is made with will + have + past participle. Then we moved onto the next form which is Future Perfect Continuous. This is formed with will + have + been + present participle. This tense is used to view future events that have already happened from a more distant point in the future. It is similar to Future Perfect Simple but the main difference is we are emphasizing the duration of the event. For example: My brother will have been living abroad for 5 years this October. Another form is Going to which is an unusual form since it is made up of the present continuous tense of the verb to go. There are two main functions of this tense in which the first is to refer to premeditated intentions. There is a sense of arrangement, but it has a rather indefinite feel. The second use of this form is for talking about predictions based on a present or past evidence. There are two last forms that may seem a little unlikely about talking about future events but the Present Continuous and Present Simple can be used for this. The Present Simple form is used to indicate programs, time tables, itineraries and public events that we have no direct control over. You will commonly see conjunctions such as after, before, when, if, until, as soon as and so on. An example would be: She'll get in touch as soon as she has the information. There is also Present Continuous which is used more for referring to solid arrangements and plans. We are more likely to prefer this form when we have made a booking at a restaurant or theater or have bought tickets for a plane journey. This form is often accompanied by time adverbials such as next month, in June etc.
