This lesson went over vocabulary, grammar and functions and how it should be taught in the classroom. The first topic was teaching vocabulary. It is very important in the early stages to motivate students to learn basic words. There are a number of factors of how easy or difficult vocabulary is going to be based on the similarity to the students' own language, English words they already know, spelling & pronunciation and appropiacy. When teaching it is important that students know the meaning of words, usage, word grammar, interaction of words and spelling. The techniques for teaching vocabulary are through engage, study and activate. A few examples of engaging students would be pictures, discussion and discovery. The study part would include word searches, crosswords and matching exercises. Finally the activate stage would use activities such as role-play or a class debate. The next section of the lesson was introducing grammatical structures. When learning a new language it is important for students to know how to use words and what the grammatical form is. It is critical that students know the meaning, use, forms & patterns and how it is spoken and written. The techniques for presenting and practicing would be through ESA. Examples of engaging the class would be a discussion, scenario building or just using pictures. Then moving on to the study stage you could use sentence building, gap fills and unscrambling sentences. Lastly, the activate stage would use role-playing or communication games to get the students talking. There are two types of grammar lessons that could be used such as Patchwork or Boomerang. A patchwork ESA grammar lesson could be organized using engage, activate, study, activate, study and activate. A boomerang ESA lesson would be engage, activate, study and activate. The difference is that the patchwork has much more activities for students to get a lot of practice.
