Unit five is about managing the classroom. This is not an easy task for the teacher. The classroom should be managed in a friendly way while being at ease with the students yet maintaining discipline. I have learnt that eye contact is very important in the classroom as well as the different ways that it can be used. Gestures and voice are another two areas that should be considered by the teacher to enhance the success of the lesson. Gestures can add to or reduce the verbal explanations given to the students. This is especially helpful when the language is difficult to understand, especially for beginners or younger students. The teacher’s voice should change according to different circumstances. In a small class, less projection is needed as opposed to a bigger class. Correct clarity, range and projection are important to maintain interest and liven up a boring lesson. Students can be grouped in different ways. This depends on the class size and activities to be carried out in a particular lesson. The classroom can also be arranged in different ways to enhance the lesson and include all students equally. It is essential that students feel safe and are in a relaxed and stress free environment. This is more likely to encourage participation from the students and get them involved in their own learning process. A teacher has a big role to play in creating a positive classroom atmosphere which can be carried over to the students as well. This positivism and discipline can be achieved by practicing the different elements in managing a classroom taught in this unit.
