Unit 4 discusses classroom materials and how they may be used, as well as ways to maintain order and discipline in the classroom. Materials may include anything such as worksheets, pictures, videos, actual objects, magazine clippings, flashcards, etc. Authentic materials are things not specifically for the classroom but for a real purpose (i.e. newspapers). Non-Authentic materials have specifically been produced by a company or teacher to be used as a teaching aid (i.e. worksheets). Authentic materials may be preferable because they are realistic examples and less predictable than specific teaching materials. The unit discusses the importance of lesson planning, to have an outline for your class, a record of what was addressed in a particular class, as well as instructions to leave in the event of a substitute teacher. The unit also covers classroom management. Being flexible and adaptable and how you present yourself to your students are the most important factors in maintaining order.
