There were instances in the past that I got hard time understanding a co worker from New Zealand because I think that when he talks, he eats the words and doesn't open his mouth big to produce the sound of each word clearly. I see the connection with the use of modals. Modals like Should, ought to, and had better can be difficult for English learners to hear. Native speakers often shorten these words in casual conversation. In rapid speech, modals seem to disappear because they are shortened and often fall on unstressed syllables. Learning this unit had helped me figure out more or else how things to be good speakers of English.
